“IF” is a little word with a BIG meaning

Don’t forget- We are all beginners at some point.

“Every champion was once a beginner that refused to give up.”

“If” is a little word with a BIG meaning! My dad used to tell me this. Growing up I always had an excuse about something. Why I didn’t get my homework done, or why I was late, or why I rode the bench in a lot of sports. I used to say “if I was only…” and the excuses would pour out of my mouth…
I’ll never forget the day I was told about the word “if”. The conversation sat in my head for over 10 years before I ever put the connection together that it IS/WAS my fault. It’s always my fault. The day I learned that the only way to change is to take personal responsibility for our situation. No one can change for us. No one can make us take the action we need to do the things we want/need. When this settles in and you really take it in, it will change your life.
I hear a couple things a lot.
1. I could never do that.
2. I wish I could do that.
3. I can only do…
4. I just did…
5. If I only…
Remember something- I don’t do what I do without constant massive action. I didn’t make all the changes I’ve made over night. I didn’t go from couch to ultra runner on day one. I didn’t just stop over eating on the first try… (Still have some pretty epic failures too…) Don’t compare yourself to me.
This is where I have to tell you to do as I say not as I do because I compare myself to others all the time… It is part of what we do as humans.
I look at athletes running 100 mile races in sub 20 hours and I want to be doing what they’re doing right now. I would love to run Badwater, The Barkley’s, Western States, Hardrock, Leadville just to say I did it (I get my shot at Leadville in 2017!!!!). I would love to run all the big races in speedy fast times… One thing I have to remind myself, the people who are doing these races and finishing in the top 10, didn’t just start with winning these races… They started as a beginner in their own way and put in the time and effort needed to get where they are now. They worked hard to accomplish the things the are doing. Most importantly they let time take it’s course while they took action.
For some people that action is a walk around the block. (Hey, it’s where I started…) For others it is a 5k or half marathon. We can’t judge ourselves based on what we see others doing. You and I are not comparable. We are in 2 completely different stages of life, we have different goals, and are on different paths. So the next time you look at yourself in the mirror, tell yourself that you are where you are and you are going to work from there. If it’s a walk, a run, a marathon or working on something that is important to you, remember that as long as you are taking action toward YOUR personal goals, there is no reason to preface it with a “if”, “only”, or “just” in comparison to others.
“If I could just be like him/her, my life would be better.” Has this ever come out of your mouth? It has mine, that’s where I got the quote from… Don’t let this be your excuse for not working toward your goals. Don’t let someone else derail your action. Put on blinders and don’t focus on anything other than taking action toward your own personal goals. One day you’ll wake up and be glad you did.
Run Epic my Friends!

  1. Great words for real. Many people compare themselves to others. It’s great you are reminding us to be ourselves and work on our own goals. : )
