Sh*t Just Got Real…

Wow… I know I was already inside of 18 weeks!!! Less than 18 weeks before my first 100 mile race. I had a plan, but for some reason, I hadn’t quite set up my mileage plan… I’m not sure how I got so distracted, but hopefully I got that taken care of! Here’s my plan to take down Antelope Island 100.

  1. I have to eat better! Don’t get me wrong, I haven’t been raiding the fridge every second of every day, but I may have eaten a little bit more peanut butter than I should have. After my recent body scan, I found out I have lost about 5 kg of fat over the last year. I think the main reason this number wasn’t higher is because I LOVE peanut butter. I have to change my habits around the PB and use it for fuel, not desert 17 times a day. (That was kinda a joke, but kinda serious…)
  2. I need to cut down my drinking. Due the nature of the holidays, this time of year can be tough to skip a drink or two. A glass of wine here, a beer there, a holiday party or two or three… Add in the generosity of others wanting to socialize and buy drinks, I have to watch how much alcohol I drink. Based on my previous habits, this will be another tough one…
  3. Motivation, 70 mile week and “How bad do you want it???…”. The sun has been gone for months. It snowed last night. It’s freezing cold. The wind is back… The roads and sidewalks are icy and downright unsafe to run on. I have to remain completely focused. I have to make sure when my alarm goes off, I’m up and ready to crush the day. Zero excuses. Zero reasons to hit the snooze button. Zero reasons to skip a day because of the weather. Granted, the weather can work to my advantage because the elements of forcing myself to continue running, working out and pushing through the discomfort of the weather, the miles and the workouts. It’s going to take massive focus. Putting in 8 hours “time on feet” is going to suck. I’d like to say I hope I catch a break on that weekend, but “a smooth sea has never developed a skilled sailor”. I must remain focused at ALL times. And who knows, there is a strong chance it will snow at my hundred. Preparation for the weather is going to be a key aspect of training.
  4. Taking care of my body and mind. I’m feeling o.k., not great but fine. I have taken it slow the last couple weeks so I can let my body recover from the crazy October I had and times up on recovery. It’s time to put lay it on the line and go after what I want! I have to stay healthy. I’ve come up with a plan to go light every 4 weeks to give myself a chance to recover and I’ve built in a good amount of cross training to give my body a way to build muscle, burn fat and keep my miles a little lower than most training plans. As I looked back at training for Silver Rush, I should have done more cross training, more swimming and more core work. I have set up my plan to avoid those same mistakes this time. A big weakness of mine is sleep… I am going to have to learn to sleep in on some Sundays and run later… Without sleep, my body won’t recover the way it needs to. This is going to be a tough one for me…

Antelope Island 100 is a test program for Leadville. My goal is to work my plan every single day so I can set myself up for success. I trust in my plan and I know if I follow the basics, I will finish Antelope Island. My number one priority is to finish. It’s to make sure I’m on track for a solid Leadville performance. It is to build the mental toughness and the mindset to go after what I want with a relentless pursuit. I have no doubt this is going to be the hardest thing I’ve ever done. I know there are going to be times when I don’t want to run or I want to quit. This training program is designed to push past the failure, develop a mindset of never giving up and to prepare myself for the future. I have no doubt I’m going to run into some stumbling blocks, but the key is to pick myself up and continue moving forward. Always moving forward One Step at a Time is my key to success.
