Are you chasing the right goal?

Are your goals strong enough to carry you our of the darkness and into the light?

I was having a deep intellectual conversation with myself the other day (Yes, I talk to myself out loud in a mirror. Try it, it might just change your life too.) and I couldn’t help but wonder, what would I do if I hit my financial goals for the year. I was imagining what it would be like to walk into the grocery store and not have to count my pennies on what foods to choose and what foods I would be without this week.

I then started to wonder what it would be like to have an apartment, nothing too fancy, but to have a place to go at night with heat, maybe a bathroom & shower and a comfortable bed. The I thought about a new car. Not a brand new one, but one I didn’t have to put oil in every week just to get back and forth to work. I also wouldn’t mind if I didn’t have to have a ratchet strap holding my hood down… that would be nice.

As I was having this wonderful reflection and goal setting session in the mirror, I started to think about what these external circumstances would do to my happiness. I looked deep within and asked myself if I would be happy with these “things”. I didn’t expect the response I gave…

Please don’t get me wrong, everything I mentioned above would be great. Of all the pieces, I would really like to not have to worry about counting pennies at the grocery store, but there are worse things that could happen. I would, however, be devastated if I had to give up the lifestyle, I get to live every day.

I have the wonderful opportunity to work with people every day to improve their lives in one way or another. I get to follow my curiosity by enthusiastically asking questions to find the what, the why, and the motives behind people’s thoughts, actions and emotions. I get the privilege of people trusting me with their inner struggles and biggest wins. I get to share in the shaking laughter, the pouring tears, the quiet hugs and the explosive celebrations when someone I have listened to steps beyond their comfort zone into their next level of life in business, fitness and family. I get the greatest opportunity to watch people grow right before my eyes toward the person they have always dreamed of becoming.

I was thinking about all the days I lived with a huge paycheck but was miserable with my 60-hour work weeks at jobs I had no interest in. I thought about all the comforts and conveniences I could buy if I just went and got a “real job” like some of the people from my previous social circle begged me to do over and over again…

I look at where I am today, where I was at rock bottom two years ago, as well as less than six months ago, and I can’t help but wonder;

What is the real reason I have stayed focused and continued to take action even when I couldn’t see the light past a few feet in front of me?

How was I able to stick to my plan of consistent daily growth while my world was falling apart around me?

Why did I come out of rock bottom, on multiple occasions, to rebuild myself to rock solid in mind, body and spirit?

There is a simple answer.

The answer is not easy, but it is simple.

I was lucky enough to set a solid goal. I set a goal so powerful, the idea of becoming the person needed to reach the goal has created the person I am today. The person who has the strength and courage to face the darkness and shine a light as bright as the sun. When I reach the “end goal”, it will only be a formality because in the process of reaching my goal, I have built the person I needed to become, the person I need to be in order to achieve the goal. The most important reason for becoming the person necessary to achieve the goal is so if the goal is taken away (nothing in life is permanent), I have become the person capable of rebuilding and achieving the desired outcome again with less time and effort because I have built and followed the process of successful goal achievement with patience and persistence mixed with commitment and consistency.

The personal development in the process cannot be bought or cheated. The laws of the universe must be followed with care and diligence as to achieve the biggest return with the greatest efficiency.

Therefor, the process of becoming the person we need to become does not come from ‘grinding’ but of using the mind to follow the most effective and efficient process put in front of us. By definition, the process of ‘grinding’ cannot produce growth because it is the belittlement and destruction of reducing a person or object to their smallest form of life.

Personal growth can only come from building one’s self up through the process of mental, physical and spiritual growth following the process of small incremental steps forward mixed with the compounding effect of consistency and the exponential growth of stacking the compound effect with consistency over time. Only when we can learn to trust in the process and teach ourselves to follow the guidance with exactness and fortitude, can we then live in peaceful harmony with the laws that guide and protect our universe from the darkness of the unknown.

Setting the proper goal is crucial to successful personal development because of the process we take to achieve the goal. We must set a goal we can understand and then build ourselves up from the inside so we can project and act as the person we need to become to achieve the desired outcome. As we move through the process, we will learn, grow, stumble, fall and continue moving forward if we have the focus and persistence to get back up again and remain steadfast in our pursuit of personal greatness.
